We have all been stuck at one point or another as to what gift to give a friend or family member. While some people are easy to buy for, others take more time and effort to locate that thoughtful gift. Eyewear and related accessory products are generally not a top of mind gift, but for some, it may be just what they want, or on a practical note, could use.

For contact lens wearers, new contact lens cases and cleaning solutions are a welcome gift. Contact lens cases should be replaced every three months to prevent contamination and infection, but the general consumer uses the same case much longer. Showcase some of the more colorful cases to add some life to a much needed product. And when it comes to cleaning solutions, no one ever wants to run out.

Lens cleaners are an absolute must for any eyeglass, reader or sunglass wearer. Not only does cleaning keep the lenses in tip top shape and allow one to see clearly, smudge-free lenses are much more attractive to look at and uphold the appearance of the wearer. Buyers should consider the recipient’s lifestyle to match the right method of cleaning to the user’s needs.

For those with athletes, weekend warriors, or boaters on their buying list, offering eyewear straps and retainers will keep the recipient in tip top shape as this group cannot afford to lose their eyewear throughout their activity. Antifog products also keep one seeing clearly to avoid injury or to best one’s personal time.

Eyeglass cords and chains offer a stylish way to keep glasses on hand for those who do not need to wear their eyewear constantly. Having multiple cords and chains allows one to completely accessorize an outfit.

There is a wide variety in eyeglasses cases and holders nowadays that please anyone’s preferences. Whether using eyeglasses, readers or sunglasses, eyeglass cases keep the eyewear protected, and holders help prevent searching for the misplaced eyewear. Eyeglass holders, from animal heads to artsy trays, can match the recipient’s interests.

Sunglasses can make for an exciting gift as consumers often pick a more daring style for their sunwear versus everyday eyewear. Sunglasses should be worn year round, and simply put, who doesn’t love a new pair.

Don’t forget the gift certificate! Gift certificates can be used to offset the remaining costs after insurance. More importantly, for the eyeglass wearers, gift certificates may prompt the purchase of a higher end frame or better lenses, encourage multiple pairs to change one’s look and style, or restock contact lenses.

It’s one thing to have the product available; it’s another thing to merchandise the product to draw attention to it. Design window and in-store displays that offer a gift-giving theme. Include stockings, gift wrapped boxes or a small tree decorated with accessory ornaments. Create gift baskets or boxes and include lens cleaners and color coordinated cloths, cases and cords. In doing so, you’re creating value for the recipient and a higher retail price point for you.

Spread the word to your customer base that eyewear and accessories make great gifts and stocking stuffers. Post the idea on your Facebook page, include it in an ad, or note it in a newsletter. Knowing your patients as you do, be sure to suggest gift ideas for other members of the family.

Let’s take care of eyes this holiday season!
