FOOTHILL RANCH, Calif. – Oakley had between 500 to 600 athletes from various countries endorsing its eyewear during the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.

The company believes that its new eyewear inventions, Radar and Enduring, gave the competing athletes unparalleled clarity and a competitive advantage. “When champions vie for gold, look for Oakley Enduring and Radar performance eyewear,” the company said.

According to the company, the Radar has a lightweight frame that is designed for cooling airflow. Oakley stated that the Enduring is the first sports performance eyewear made exclusively for women and that in order to provide women wearing the eyewear with a perfect fit, the company analyzed every aspect of the female cranial anatomy.

The lenses on both of these products are interchangeable and Oakley states that a popular option for athletes will be the +RED Polarized lens, which according to the company, blocks 99.9 percent of glare and reduces infrared light, transmitting truer colors, thereby allowing athletes to see every detail of their environment.

With such a high level of concern given to the pollution in Beijing, Oakley maintains that its products were the best-suited to fight these environmental factors. “In the dust, heat and wind in Beijing, Oakley eyewear was a must-have for gold medal contenders. They can select a lens tint that optimizes performance in their environment, and they can keep up with changing light conditions. The precision filtering, glare elimination, wind protection and impact resistance of Oakley lenses provided critical performance advantages,“ the company said.

The company points out that its infusion molding process, which bonds the polarizing filter to the lens material at the molecular level, eliminates the haze and optical distortion common to ordinary polarized lenses and that its hydrophobic/oleophobic lens coating, which repels water, skin oil and debris, enables lenses to remain crystal clear despite environmental conditions. All lenses feature Oakley’s High Definition Optics (HDO) and are made of pure Plutonite, which according to Oakley provide 100 percent UV filtering.

Each Oakley lens coating lets in a specific amount of light. According to the company, coatings such as Black and Gold Iridium are optimum for intense sunlight, and when the sun is less intense, coatings such as Blue Iridium and Slate Iridium are more effective. With the wide range of lens choices for varying environmental conditions and brand new frame designs, Oakley is confident that the Radar and Enduring gave its athletes a competitive edge, no matter what their athletic pursuit.

Notable athletes who wore Oakleys in the 2008 Games included Australian, Beach Volleyball Gold Medalist, Natalie Cook, who sported the Flak, British cyclist Mark Cavendish, seen in the Radar, and Lolo Jones, the American Track & Field Star.
