Alexandria, VA— The Vision Council and Prevent Blindness America join with other eye care professionals and vision care groups in warning those celebrating Independence Day to keep a safe distance from fireworks and other related materials today. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, approximately 9,000 people will be treated in emergency rooms across the country today for firework related injuries, and an average of 22% of these will be injuries to the eyes.

Due to this speculation and a past report from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), The Vision Council and PBA recommend avoiding use of fireworks entirely, attending professional displays only by licensed operators, and wearing protective eyewear at all times.

“Independence Day is an extremely dangerous time for eyes and vision health,” said Ed Greene, CEO of The Vision Council. “All too often, we hear about an unfortunate situation that cuts a July 4th celebration short. In order to have a fun and healthy Independence Day, The Vision Council and Prevent Blindness America ask Americans to consider several safety precautions before heading outdoors.”

The associations also warn aboutt UV damage which is especially pertinent in summer months, and instruct that sunglasses and other UV-protective eyewear should be worn at all times.
