By Delia Paunescu: Assitant Editor

As a newcomer to Vision Monday, I’ve made some interesting observations since taking on my editorial beats this past March. With a background of online journalism, I’m encouraged to see all the activity at VisionMonday.com, specifically since our foray into social networking, puts us in touch with our readers in new ways.

In addition to working on VM’s Twitter and Facebook accounts and posting items to Jobson’s SightNation.com, I’ve been reporting on optical retailers and ECPs and in reviewing many sites and postings.

Here are some of my suggestions: Use the digital media to engage patients and develop more substantial relationships with customers. ECPs tell me that when they are able to know more about the patients, they feel more equipped to provide better service. Online tools present a perfect way to nurture the relationship with patients once they leave your office.

The world of social media has a certain “tone” and enables patients and customers to see a fun, lighthearted side of your practice. The web builds other connections, too, through interesting articles you or your staff share with them. Post tips for protecting customers’ eyes, explain new product arrivals or add some photos of your office.

Today’s new media comes packed with a myriad of tools, options and presets—all designed to enable you to customize how they’re used for your business. Do a little research and start interacting.

And be sure to “like” VM on Facebook and “follow” us on Twitter.
