Move over, Rodgers and Hammerstein! A new songwriting duo has emerged! Mel Schrier, O.D., and Len Rand, O.D., share a little ditty that they wrote during pathology class at Columbia University School of Optometry in 1948.

As we were taught the symptoms of glaucoma, the hit show on Broadway was Oklahoma! says Dr. Schrier. So, Oh, Glaucoma was a natural way to remember the signs of glaucoma for our upcoming exams.

And so, heres the newest old optometric smash hit, Oh, Glaucoma! by Drs. Mel Schrier and Len Rand.

Oh Glaucoma!

(Sung to the tune of Oklahoma!)

Oh glaucoma, when you see rainbows around a light,

Where the tensions high, pain in the eye,

And you wake up screaming in the night!

Oh glaucoma, where you get a cupping of the disc,

A scotoma grows, the vision goes,

And an operations still a risk!

Your dark adaptation is slow, and your anterior chamber shallow,

And if you say yip-i-yip-i-yip-i-yay,

Youve got a case of glaucoma; see the doctor today!

Drs. Schrier and Rand both went on to have successful optometric careers.

Dr. Schrier practiced in New York City, and Dr. Rand practiced in Rockland County, N.Y.

Both doctors have since retired from active practice. Dr. Schrier is the president of the Columbia University Optometry Alumni Association and lives in Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif. Dr. Rand now lives in Boynton Beach, Fla.
