Complete Exams per O.D. Hour

Benchmark: In 2008, the median number of eye exams conducted per O.D. hour in affiliated practices was 1.13.

  • The exams per hour ratio of affiliated O.D.s is comparable to that of private practice O.D.s and O.D.s working in other corporate settings.  At this hourly production rate, an O.D. working 2,000 hours annually conducts 2,260 exams per year. The ratio has not changed over the past four years among affiliated O.D.s.

  • Hourly exam productivity is correlated with practice size and the most relevant comparative benchmark is hourly production of practices of comparable size. The median practice among the largest 20% of affiliated practices conducts 1.44 exams per hour.

  • The most productive 20% of practices conduct 1.68 exams per hour, the least productive 20% perform just 0.73 exams per hour.

  • Among Walmart practices, median hourly exam production is 1.19, among Sam’s Club practices it is 0.97.
