PITTSBURGH—Insurance giant Highmark—whose HVHC subsidiary operates Davis Vision, Viva International and the Eye Care Centers of America retail optical chain—saw its net income drop by about 75 percent in 2008, to $94.1 million. In 2007, the company’s net income reached $375.4 million.

In announcing its financial results, Highmark attributed the income decline in part to “sharply lower” investment income.

The company's total operating revenues were $13 billion last year, up from $11.9 billion in 2007.

Highmark’s vision operations generated combined revenues of $1.2 billion in 2008.
