Zimco Optics adds a sunglass collection to its branded English Laundry ophthalmic line introduced early last year. Inspired by English Laundry founder and designer Christopher Wicks, the sunglasses echo the landscape of England’s Manchester music scene, the original days of rock ’n’ roll and the British invasion. The initial launch consists of seven styles (three men’s, three women’s and one unisex design). Additional sunglasses will be added throughout the year. Shapes range from aviators and rectangles to rounded, cateye and clubman designs, and are offered in a mixture of materials, including metal, plastic and actual bamboo. The frames feature the signature metal-cast Union Jack. Each style is named for a fixture of the Manchester music scene, spanning the past four decades.

PHILOSOPHY: “Just as the ophthalmic collection does, our new English Laundry sun line closely follows the philosophy of English Laundry’s founder Christopher Wicks—marrying the music and fashion scene of Wicks’ native Manchester, England with the frame designs,” says Zimco president Mitch Zimberg. “Inspired by Britain’s gray skies, rich history, local pubs, industrial landscapes and underground music scene, Zimco has instilled each style with the spirit of Manchester.”

MARKETING: Merchandising materials include a poster, countercards and logo block. Each style comes with a case and cleaning cloths silk-screened with the classic English Laundry logo, vintage graphics or verbiage synonymous with the brand, such as “Welcome to Manchester” or “No one can take us.”
