The rectangle. It’s not a very flashy frame shape. Worn and loved by so many, it is the khaki pant of eyewear—ubiquitous and unobtrusive. It’s never a fashion trend, but then it’s never a fashion faux pas either. Since its popularity can’t be denied, maybe it’s time to appreciate the rectangle for the crowd pleaser it is while also exploring ways to breathe new life into this shape. Subtle adjustments make a big difference; deeper rectangles look more balanced, while softer corners lessen the shape’s severity. Breaking away from a true rectangle by widening the top gives a nice nod to the CatEye. But don’t forget that what makes the humble rectangle so special is that it doesn’t try too hard, and that in the end, is what makes it a favorite.
