Jillian Urcelay: Why was it important for Tura to expand the L.A.M.B. Universal Fit collection with specialized frame fitting for Black and Brown women specifically?
Jennifer Coppel: There is a large void in the market for frames that fit and flatter Black and Brown women. Many brands use a single Euro-centric fit standard. At Tura, we have always strived to create diverse fits. We analyze many facial structures and tailor our frames to address the fitting needs of a variety of consumers. By doing so, we enhance their face, provide maximum comfort and better serve their vision correction. In the past few years, we have conducted several fit studies, focusing primarily on Black and Brown women of all sizes. We have found several common denominators, and the L.A.M.B. UF collection is tailored to enhance those features. Black and Brown women will feel more confident and empowered wearing these frames.
In what ways is this new release different from the L.A.M.B. styles that have been created in the past?
Many of our early styles aimed to fit Gwen Stefani herself. Gwen is very petite in her face shape and features. Over time, we introduced a larger size range to the L.A.M.B. collection but continued with a Euro-centric nose bridge, face form and nasal flare. The L.A.M.B. UF collection modifies these fit specifications, and three to four additional factors depending on the frame, for ultimate diversity.
Why do you believe creating specialized collections like this one is a necessary step that the eyewear industry as a whole should take?
As we know from the recent Vision Council survey on diversity, the optical industry does not reflect the U.S. racial census. This is perhaps why there is very little diversity in fit. However, the patient base is incredibly diverse in the U.S. Many patients are not being served optimally due to the lack of awareness and action of the eyewear industry. As frame makers, our job is to help people see. To do that effectively, it is our mission to create eyewear that fits appropriately, provides comfort all day long and optimizes the prescription. When we accomplish this mission, our customers feel confident, empowered and beautiful.
