“In order to write about life first you must live it,” said Ernest Hemingway. This axiom translates through to eyewear design as well. When Arthur Jankolovits, president of New York Eye, decided to reinvigorate his Ernest Hemingway collection, he went back to his archives. Sourcing the original 1960s-era Stadium frame from American Optical, Jankolovits studied the distinctive craftsmanship—examining the contour, rivet placement, keyhole bridge and temple shape for its steadfast qualities—all the while taking note of elements that could be evolved and improved. Jankolovits fine-tuned the style with contemporary updates like spring hinges, lightweight zyl and fresh colorways. Pushing the modern appeal further with luminescent fades of burgundy on crystal, blue on crystal, smoky tortoise and even an au courant matt black. The final product is a dynamic display of eight color options—all designed with an ergonomic keyhole bridge for a relaxed fit. As Jankolovits so keenly pointed out during a recent visit to the 20/20 offices in NYC, “The design of a frame always starts with the bridge—it’s the key to the fit.” Backed by a wealth of optical heritage, a legendary author as its brand warrior and a profound attention to detail—this collection proves that “in order to design eyewear first you must live it.”
