ABOUT GOLF

• Golf originated from a game played on the eastern coast of Scotland during the 15th century. Players hit a pebble around with a stick or club on a natural course of sand dunes, rabbit runs and tracks.
• In the mid-15th century, Scotland was preparing to defend itself against an English invasion. The Scots’ love for golf caused them to neglect military training. The Scottish parliament of
King James II banned golf in 1457. The ban, largely ignored by the
people, was finally lifted when King James IV took up golf himself.
• The word caddie comes from the French cadets who were Mary, Queen of Scots’ helpers. She introduced
golf to France when she studied there.
• Golf was made an official Olympic sport in 1900.
• Astronaut Alan Shephard hit a golf ball on the moon in 1971.
