Leila Lays It All Out
For this issue I had the distinct pleasure not only of completing my first-ever cover story, but interviewing the amazing Leila Hurst, professional surfer and all-around incredible female sport star. Her stirring story caught 20/20's eyes and I was "super stoked" (as she would say) to share her enthusiasm, dedication and "rad" attitude with our readers. During our phone interview from her parent's home in Kauai, Hawaii, she treated me with an unearned friendliness and approachability only the most charismatic can authenticate. She took the time to give me a tutorial on the surf industry and a peek into her personal life—her love for the environment, appreciation of Zeal and their "mellow" team, future surf dreams and the story of her sister Sophia, who has Spina Bifida. Not only is she a world-class athlete, she's a true individual full of heart, and for my first feature I couldn't be happier to pick her brain on her sport, finding her calling and of course, the newest vocab words on the waves.

Making Moves With Oakley, Lap 1
|
During the last product preview at the Oakley showroom, our reps carefully outlined the brand's newest strategy: a focus on the fairer sex. Oakley is fashioning eyewear with names like "LBD" for "Little Black Dress," offering special features and fits just for the feminine face. The designers maintain the strong sentiment that no woman should have to stoop to staying active improvising in masculine gear or ineffectual fashion statements. Along with this front, they invited a group of women to run an upcoming Oakley-sponsored NYC 10K as a team. Although a previous injury will be keeping me sidelined during the event, Oakley wasted no time in outfitting me, generously ensuring I feel like "part of the team" (and totally spoiled!). It's coming up on crunch time for the race and the whole crew is geared up and spec-ed out in Oakley from head to toe, ready to get moving (in the right gear), taking on the city and unsightly sport-styling one step at a time. —BB
