NEW YORK—The SUNY College of Optometry has opened a new comprehensive referral service for optometrists and ophthalmologists in the metropolitan New York area.

The University Optometric Center, ( UOC) the College’s patient care facility, is one of the country’s largest outpatient vision care clinics, serving patients eyecare needs worldwide. As a training facility, the UOC has some of the most comprehensive and up-to-date diagnostic and treatment technologies, according to an announcement from SUNY. The UOC faculty consists of eyecare specialists who treat many ocular conditions that most eyecare providers never see.

“If there is a new and better way to treat ocular disease or vision problems, chances are we’re already doing it,” said Dr. Harriette Canellos, director of the referral service.

The services range from laser refractive surgery, ocular disease and special testing, to vision therapy pediatrics, low vision and specialty contact lenses. A unique unit within the UOC is the Head Trauma Unit providing comprehensive visual evaluations and visual services to individuals with acquired head trauma and strokes.
