In 1987, Larry Leight’s premier collection for Oliver Peoples gained him international exposure and helped transform the perception of eyeglasses for the 20th century. This year, as the company, founded by Leight and his brother, Dennis, celebrates its 20th anniversary, Larry’s contribution to eyewear over the last two decades cannot be ignored. Madonna, Brad Pitt, Elton John and Jack Nicholson have all worn his designs and it’s become clear that this member of the Council of Fashion Designers of America, has become more than an eyewear designer--he has become a shaper of American culture.

1. What are the most important influences on your design work?
My inspiration comes from an extensive array of culture. Southern California’s fashion, sports, diverse music, film industry, and even red carpet events all generate the Hollywood lifestyle reflected in the designs. Each one of my collections evoke the Hollywood spirit past, present, and future. My travels around the world also influence my designs.

2. What excites you most about design?
Being able to take an experience and translate it into eyewear is the most exciting and rewarding part of creating collections. For example, we’ve introduced gradient color zyl which was inspired by a sunset over Bondi Beach in Australia. I envisioned a gradient laminate color from the striking scenery and created Topaz Gradient where a metallic golden color fades into a crystal color.

3. Describe the ultimate Oliver Peoples customer.
The ultimate Oliver Peoples consumer is a confident intellectual with a progressive sense of style. It is someone who appreciates discreet branding and discoverability.

4. What’s been the greatest challenge in interpreting your design philosophy into your eyewear line?
To continue to be passionate and excited about my work--my drive to creatively envision and imagine designs that are desirable and become iconic to the Oliver Peoples customer.

5. What are some of your favorite pieces or characteristics of the collection?
The new Oliver Peoples Suspended Metal series is my favorite. The Sofiane is the debut style of the series and is one of our greatest accomplishments in sunglass design. A hand-laid metal wire is encased in two layers of hand-sculpted plastic. This technology has been an extensive labor of love for me as it took several years to develop.

6. What is the best advice anyone ever gave you?
Stay authentic, be original, and be careful who you trust.
