NEW YORK—Julius Tart, an optical industry veteran, died in Queens, N.Y. on March 31 following a brief illness. He was 93.

Tart founded Tart Optical, a New York City-based manufacturer of eyeglass frames. As of the 1990s, it was one of the last domestic frame manufacturers. The company is no longer in business.

In addition, Tart and his son, the late Ira Tart, owned Classic Case Company, which produced eyeglasses cases. The company, which operated a plant in Middletown, N.Y., is no longer in business.

In 1967, Tart, together with partner Ralph Woythaler, founded the New York-based wholesale laboratory Eye-Glasses Inc. Woythaler became sole owner of the lab, now known as 21st Century Optics, in 1985.

“I’ll never forget the invaluable business lessons and business acumen I learned at Julie’s side,” said Woythaler.

Tart is survived by a nephew, Richard Tart.
