SAN FRANCISCO--Following up on its 2004 inaugural eye injury survey, the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) is again asking all practicing U.S. ophthalmologists, as well as other physicians who treat eye injuries, to participate in the weeklong Eye Injury Snapshot Project. The survey will be conducted May 15 to 22.

More than 600 physicians participated in the 2004 survey, which showed that 75 percent of those injured were not wearing protective eyewear. The study also found that half of the injuries occurred at home.

"The American Academy of Ophthalmology is committed to building public awareness around eye injuries, and to encourage good eye health and safety behaviors," said Paul J. Sternberg Jr., MD, AAO secretary of communications. "Once we gain insight into the nature and prevalence of ocular injuries, we hope to raise public awareness of eye injuries."

This year, the AAO is partnering with the American Society of Ocular Trauma to sponsor the Eye Injury Snapshot Project.
