PEOPLE ARE SAYING

What Led You to SECO This Year?

Robert Kish, OD
New Groton, Conn.

Reason for Attending: “I’ve been attending SECO since 1988, and I always choose my courses depending on what my patient’s needs are,” he says. “Currently, I have a lot of diabetic patients, and many patients are interested in the latest refractive surgery techniques, so I’m looking forward to attending courses that deal with those two topics. In the boondocks, where we are, sometimes the information doesn’t get there, so it’s good to have a meeting like this.”

Lesli Koo, OD
Trinidad and Tobago.

Reason for Attending: “Even though my practice is located in a third world country, I want my patients to know that I am up to date on the latest technology and research, so I can answer their questions and educate them,” she says. “This year, I want to get updated on the latest and greatest on refractive surgery because my patients have been asking me a lot of questions about what’s out there.”

Albert Lee, OD
San Francisco

Reason for Attending: “I’m here to meet up with friends that I haven’t seen since school; but I’m also here for the CE education and, specifically, the courses on treatment of diseases, such as glaucoma,” he says. “I’m interested in the latest research, new diagnostic techniques and new possible treatments, so I can pass this education on to my patients.”

Hector Santiago
Dean of the Inter American University of Puerto Rico School of Optometry
San Juan, P.R.

Reason for Attending: “I am one of the lecturers at the Cultural Diversity Workshop. The face of the nation has changed. For instance, within 30 years, one of four Americans will be Latino,” he says. “Therefore, for optometrists, this presents a challenge, but also an opportunity to be culturally sensitive to this and other diverse patient populations you will come in contact with in your practice.”

Gregory Laskerr, OD
Tampa, Fla.

Reason for Attending: “I’ve been coming to SECO biannually for 14 years to refresh myself on the rare ocular conditions and manifestations,” he says. “Most of my patients are young, healthy and college-age, but I still see an occasional unusual red eye and unusual-looking nerves, among other things, so I want to be prepared for these patients and be able to answer their questions and provide them with the best up-to-date care.”

Kristian Dugger, OD
Nevada, Iowa

Reason for Attending: “I’m interested in learning about the latest developments in macular degeneration,” he says. “Although I don’t see it as much as a secondary tertiary care practice, my general practice patients always have really good questions about the latest findings and treatments, so I’m looking forward to answering those questions and educating them when I get back.”
