CHARTRES, France—Luneau Technology, a Chartres, France-based supplier of ophthalmic diagnosis systems, has acquired Briot International and its Weco subsidiary from Belgium-based Buchmann Optical Holding. Briot International develops, manufactures and markets Briot and Weco edgers and Rodenstock Instruments refraction systems.

The acquisition, which involves a merger of the companies, was finalized June 17; the amount of the transaction was not disclosed.

A Briot spokesperson said the merger involves all of its global subsidiaries, including Briot USA. Management will remain in place at the subsidiaries, according to the spokesperson.

“This merger is an excellent opportunity to build our growth in the optical market,” said Luneau Technology CEO Marc Abitbol, PhD. “We want to combine the synergy of our products with our innovative power in order to develop our global presence. The Luneau-Visionix brand completes the Briot/Weco edger range with high-tech optometric equipment and several patents in the ophthalmic optics sector.”

Tom Pfleging, president and CEO of Briot USA, said that as a result of the merger, the company will take on additional product lines including auto refractors, Visionix lens analyzers and the Dimetrix blocking system.

Briot International, based in Pont-de-l’Arche, France, was founded in 1934. The company specializes in developing, manufacturing and distributing edgers for opticians. Its subsidiary, Weco, is based in Düsseldorf, Germany and was founded in 1914. Weco is a pioneer in the optics sector and a forerunner in integrated drilling.

Luneau Technology specializes in ophthalmic diagnosis systems. It develops, manufactures and markets innovative products aimed at optical and ophthalmologic professionals and based on wavefront technology.
