NEW YORK—A group of oversized, dancing eyeballs made a surprise midday appearance in Times Square on Tuesday afternoon, May 25, drawing curious looks and smiles from tourists and locals alike. The eyeballs, who were part of a “flash mob” of colorfully dressed dancers, were in town to launch the new, nationwide public awareness campaign for eye health produced by the “Think About Your Eyes” coalition, which consists of Essilor, Luxottica Group and VSP Global.

Praising the public awareness campaign for eye health recently launched by the Think About Your Eyes coalition, New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg has proclaimed the week of May 24 to 30 as “Think About Your Eyes Week” here.

“In New York City, we know that nothing is more important than the health and well being of our residents,” Mayor Bloomberg proclaimed. “That’s why our administration has worked hard to improve health care access and eliminate health care disparities facing New Yorkers, and it’s why we’ve promoted innovative public health policies that help our residents live longer, healthier lives. We’re grateful to have partners like the Think About Your Eyes coalition, which is dedicated to promoting eye health in the five boroughs and beyond. Its efforts are helping to build a healthier, happier future for so many people, and I applaud everyone involved with the campaign for their commitment to making sure all New Yorkers can see clearly!”

The Times Square event launched the Think About Your Eyes coalition’s public awareness campaign, which is targeting consumers in Los Angeles, Chicago, Denver, Atlanta, Houston, Sacramento, Cincinnati and Portland, Ore. The campaign includes television, radio, online and social media communications and a Web site, ThinkAboutYourEyes.com, as well as special events in select markets, according to coalition spokesperson Wally Lovejoy of Luxottica Group.
