California OD Creates Online, Self-help Videos

Dr. Robert Rothbard, an independent optometrist in Alta Loma, Calif., has developed a free, online video library of vision care and preventive maintenance for consumers. The library consists of seven self-help videos that Dr. Rothbard created with director/co-host Julie John. They can be seen at wehelpuc.com, and cover topics such as "How Vision Can Improve Through Training," "Vision and Sports" and "Eye Health, Diet, Supplements and Exercise."

Dr. Robert "Bob" Rothbard has been practicing optometry for more than 30 years. He is affiliated with the Rancho Cucamonga Optometric and Vision Center in Alta Loma, Calif.

Essilor Launches Facebook Game and Sweepstakes

For more than three years, Essilor of America has launched a promotion to invite consumers to defeat the five enemies of clear vision—glare, scratches, smudges, dust and water—with the "Combat the Enemies of Clear Vision with Captain Crizal" Facebook game and sweepstakes. The game provides an engaging and interactive platform that will both educate consumers about how Crizal No-Glare lenses offer the clearest vision possible, and also direct them to enter the sweepstakes.

To play "Combat the Enemies of Clear Vision with Captain Crizal," consumers must help defend Captain Crizal by collecting Crizal Power Lenses while dodging certain obstacles. Once the player collects 10 Crizal Power Lenses, he can combat the five enemies of clear vision, which will appear throughout the game to obscure the player's game screen.

The sweepstakes will offer one lucky grand prize winner a Motorola Xoom with Wi-Fi, a $1,000 general use gift card and their own pair of Crizal Avancé with Scotchgard Protector lenses. The second place winner will receive a $1,000 gift card and a pair of Crizal lenses, and the third place winner will receive a $500 gift card and a pair of Crizal lenses. Participants may enter the sweepstakes without playing the game.

Essilor will donate $5 to the Foundation for Eye Health Awareness for each new CrizalUSA Facebook page "like" and another $5 when consumers play the game, up to a maximum of $20,000. The Foundation for Eye Health Awareness is focused on educating consumers about the importance of eye health and strives to help the public understand the importance of taking care of their eyes through its campaign Think About Your Eyes.

The sweepstakes and donation drive began on Oct. 3 at 8:00 a.m. Central Time (CT) and ends on Oct. 31 at 8:00 p.m. (CT). Consumers can play the game and enter the sweepstakes by visiting the CrizalUSA Facebook page and clicking on the Contest tab.

eL&T Tip of the Month

A good lens care plan will not only help your clients to ensure the best possible vision; it also enables you to derive a new and profitable revenue stream from the sales of a family of lens care products. Don't be timid or uncomfortable with the idea of actively selling cleaner, cloths and wipes. You'll be surprised at how much more frequently clients will enter your office. Rather than just at exam time, or when they've sat on their eyewear, they'll be in to say "hi" while purchasing refill cleaner kits, wipes and a new cloth. You must, however, approach the entire job in the right way.

LT-980 (HC) Tracer

Manufacturer: Santinelli International
Description: Advanced, new generation "concept tracer" featuring high-curve frame trace capability with fully automatic operation.
Features: Among the LT-980's many unique features is the unit's stylus which automatically adjusts to the rise and fall of the curve of any frame. The sophisticated software then calculates the effect that the curve imparts with respect to size, reproducing the best digitized frame data available. The LT-980 is intended for production in early 2012.

The LT-980's ultra-low stylus-pressure feature eliminates distortion on even the thinnest, most flexible of frames. This is achieved by altering the angle approach of the stylus-to-frame whereby the pressure is dispersed over a larger area of the frame and at various angles, rather than merely the standard 90 degree angle. Furthermore, this low pressure feature provides precise tracing data and prolongs the lifetime of the tracer's stylus.

The three-axis assemblies, horizontal, vertical and rotational, which control and guide the stylus operation, are completely sealed, thereby protecting the mechanical core of the tracer from frame debris. Consequently, the LT-980's technology will provide years of trouble-free operation and optimum performance.
