It shouldn't come as much of a surprise that as editor-in-chief of 20/20 I'm quite a magazine fanatic. Yes, I do my fair share of book reading (mostly stealing novels from feature editor Gloria Nicola and art director Iris Johnson) but the “mag” obsession is beyond reason.

I think I read about 40 different publications every month. Car magazines. Fashion rags. Business mags. Music periodicals (mostly British, specifically Mojo and Uncut), shelter monthlies, toy train and toy car stuff (my son Gram is the perfect excuse for those), photography glossies, occasional travel issues and ALWAYS Esquire and The New Yorker. In fact, I just cancelled my 33-year long subscription to the New Yorker, protesting their awful popular music coverage but now I buy it every week in anger hoping they've ditched the jerk doing the asinine reviews.

Where was I? Oh, yeah. I'm addicted to magazines. Not newspapers. I rarely read a newspaper, except for the New York Sunday Times and I read that because of its magazine sections.

And here's the really scary part: I always want to “save” most of these magazines, for… future reference. I'm continually devising elaborate storage systems bent on being able to access seemingly esoteric information vital to my life and my work. So I'm sure by now you get the distinct feeling I'm trying to convince you to save every copy of 20/20 that comes your way, hoping you'll agree that each issue contains a wealth of info essential to your position as an optical professional.

Well, in fact, that's sorta what I want to know. Do you save issues? Do you mark specific articles or features for future reference? Do you pass along your issues of 20/20 to your staff? Your frame buyers? Your (!?) patients? Does it ever reach the waiting room?

We want to know because we want to know and serve you better. And to that end we want to know the place that the web shares in your 20/20 experience. Do you visit our site at www.2020mag.com? Has it replaced the magazine as your main “frame” squeeze? Do you get our e-blast with the commentary voice-over?

Or…like me…are you just plain addicted to magazines?

Tell us how it is for you. Tell us what you'd like us to do (within reason of course).

It's well known around my home that when Dad comes home after a long, intense day of optical retail, he MUST relax for about 1/2-1 hr. (or more) with his favorite (read newest) magazines...uninterupted! This helps me to chill!. I read my car mags, computer mags, optical & optometric journals, and misc catolgues.
As fas as saving mags for future reference...I do not. Howver, I do cut out any info/articles I do want to save for myself.

I need to visit 20/20.com more often than I do...just old, I guess...

20:20 is a must-read and must-save. We pass it around, earmark articles, read the email, love the voice over. We have not replaced the mag with the website, tho the website is good for quick reference. As far as saving them, yes we do. We have copies from four years ago still kicking around (tho we usually ditch them after about a year). We are a frame company so we really, really do read everything you write with great interest.

I read and save 20/20, today I find myself doing more on line than in hard copy. When an article is useful for training I print it up and distribute to my accounts. I wish some of the eye care professionals I visit with read more business articles to keep them savvy in practice management. The one magazine I read cover to cover each month is Fortune. It always offers insight on popular business culture and I find myself using examples of successful stories regarding big and small business. Another good business resource is Forbes online. I hate to admit it, but my absolute guilty pleasure in magazines is People (gotta get my Brad and Angie fix).

Save 20/20? Big YES! I don't have enough space or I would make a 20/20 library. I hold onto a year's worth and as I am ready to recycle, I go through each one AGAIN to see if I missed anything I want to file away for reference. I save pictures of current styles to show my clients, especially sunwear. Of all the eyewear magazines I get, 20/20 is the only one worth keeping. I enjoy magazines also, New York in particular.
