11/29/2007 Care for some Brand-y?
Posted by 20/20&U Blog Admin    • Comments (3)
I’m sure most of you are familiar with What’s Brand New, 20/20’s extra-edition March issue dedicated to helping you discover the latest in branded eyewear and sunwear collections. That issue also contains an extensive listing of ALL of the eyewear brands we are aware of in optical with both phone and online info on how to connect with the vendors and manufacturers presenting those collections.

“Do you know if you have the new Eagles CD?” “This store’s got no pet department.” “No, it’s a new double CD by the Eagles… a group… from California… they have an exclusive deal with this store… it’s the only place you can buy it… it’s the reason I came shopping here today.”

11/9/2007 What the Heck’s a Combo?
Posted by 20/20&U Blog Admin    • Comments (1)
We just delivered our November 20/20 issue on something we continually call combo frames:  those styles combining zyl and metal materials as a most viable and appealing frame choice. The feature is called “Blatant Materialism” since it has some fun sending the decidedly overt message that eyewear is, at its most basic, a product situation and solution hugely based on the proper and artistic mastering of elemental materials.

So how are these “combo” frames in your biz? Does the mix o ...

10/30/2007 Guess Who I Saw OnLine?
Posted by 20/20&U Blog Admin    • Comments (3)
Rightfully so, considering the scenario of any sort of publishing these days, our publisher Jim Vitkus is very antsy about getting some responses from the optical community about day-to-day online habits.

As you must be aware every aspect of magazine publishing is now critically impacted by an on-line presence that rivals print in every way from readership to revenue and this very moment is, in fact, just the veeeery long beginning.

“Like it” or “What?” the presence of Internet r ...

10/22/2007 Niche Picking

Luxury? Value? Rimless?

Sport Sun? Designer Sunglasses?

Managed Care? Who Cares?

Niche this…Niche that. So where is your comfort zone when it comes to dispensing and retailing eyewear? We put that sometimes dreaded “retailing” word in there because when it comes to niche merchandising and marketing you simply must understand that dispensing eyewear is encased in the incredibly complex mix of selling goods to good people looking to buy. Or maybe even that label itches your pa ...

10/7/2007 Reading Materials

It shouldn't come as much of a surprise that as editor-in-chief of 20/20 I'm quite a magazine fanatic. Yes, I do my fair share of book reading (mostly stealing novels from feature editor Gloria Nicola and art director Iris Johnson) but the “mag” obsession is beyond reason.

I think I read about 40 different publications every month. Car magazines. Fashion rags. Business mags. Music periodicals (mostly British, specifically Mojo and Uncut), shelter monthlies, toy train and toy car stuff (m ...

We’re packing our bags. Most of the 20/20 edit team is in travel mode and setting out for Vision Expo West in Las Vegas. Are you going? If so, we hope to see you there and be sure to pick up all five publications we’ve prepared especially for the show. Look for our regular September issue of 20/20 with our largest style section ever and an exceptionally wonderful Lafont eyewear cover, the September 15 Seller’s Guide with Coach’s Reed Krakoff on the cover, our Galleria supplement, the special edi ...

9/18/2007 Questioning Deluxe Accommodations

I’m sure you’ve noticed some hefty changes in the land of luxury retailing these last few years. It hasn’t specifically been a downward (or upward) sku-ering of price, purse-say, although lower cost goods have certainly slipped in readily as absurdly expensive thing-a-ma-bobs some folks just can’t live without.

It’s more a factor of the consumer market being targeted. The super-rich have always loved their Bentleys and Birkin bags. They will continue to do so. But, increasingly, curre ...

Yes. That's me circa 1969 on a Long Island, N.Y. beach. And those are my mother's sunglasses perched precariously (and upside down) on my little, yet-to-be-fully developed nose bridge.

I always loved playing dress up. Having two older sisters I was fair game for some pretty entertaining ensembles. Sunglasses many times were a key...

8/26/2007 So What’s YOUR Point (of View)?

Better later than never but better be best by now. The editorial team of 20/20 has been contemplating the initiation of a blog for quite some time but the waiting game has been earmarked by some very definitive objectives.

With its engaging and often conversational style the published edition of 20/20 already functions as a readily available forum for the whole optical professional community. Responses from our readers ...
